MECHANICAL TESTS COMPOSITE LAMINATES

Composite materials exhibit anisotropic mechanical properties that depend on the type of fiber, its distribution, volume percent, orientation, matrix, fiber-matrix interaction, and manufacturing process.

Composite materials provide almost unlimited design freedom given the infinity of possible combinations between the different fibres, matrices and lay-ups. However, this freedom often translates into lack of representative data for the specific combination required by the project.

The set of these data constitutes the material card, necessary for the designer to model and simulate the component as well as providing a verification element for FEM models.

As the degree of complexity of the simulation increases, in order to reach an acceptable level of predictability of the model, a high quality of input data is required, which must be as representative as possible of the material used for the project

Without a valid materialcard, which forms the basis in the modular pyramid model used in order to characterize a composite material, it is not possible to model/process components who use this material.
The following tests allow to obtain all the mechanical properties necessary to characterize a composite material.
